Proud Aesthetic Nurse
Every year, on 12th May, we celebrate International Nurses Day. The date is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a famous nurse who transformed nursing to make hospitals cleaner & safer.
It takes years to train nurses and learning continues throughout their career . Nurses can choose to specialise in different areas .
Following a long career in the NHS, I chose to develop my career by studying the Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Aesthetic Injectable Therapies. This area of practice interested me, but rather than take the easy, short route that most do ( a one or two day training course with no formal exam) I chose to study hard for 1 year. This involved completing 4 lengthy pieces of course work and a minimum of 6 full practical days of hands on training .
Why did I choose this route?
Throughout my nursing career I have studied many courses to gain qualifications that gave me knowledge & understanding to provide quality, safe, evidence based care to my patients. Aesthetic medicine is not (yet!) regulated in the UK (Things are happening around this subject now). As a nurse, I have standards of care to meet and must abide by the NMC code. I personally do not think anyone could meet the safe standards for facial aesthetics following a 1-2 day course with no required study/written work or regulated qualification at the end of it.
Patient safety is my priority at all times and hopefully the forthcoming move to provide a more regulated service in the UK will see the aesthetic industry develop for the benefit of patients.
