Many muscles are involved in facial expression, and this causes our skin to move with the muscles. Youthful skin is firm, elastic and smooth. Sun damage and the ageing process result in our skin losing its elasticity and thus when we make our facial expressions (frown, smile, raising our brows), we see lines and wrinkles appearing (dynamic wrinkles). As this process progresses, some of these lines become permanent and apparent at rest (static lines).

Botulinum Toxin A is a neurotoxin produced from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. It works by blocking the chemical signals to the nerves, required for the muscles to contract. The muscles become “frozen” and therefore our skin looks fresher with less lines and wrinkles, depending on how much Botulinum Toxin A we inject. The effects are temporary and last from 3-5 months.

By starting Botox treatment before the static lines develop, this can help prevent them from developing. If static lines are already present, regular Botox treatment can help to soften these over a period of time.
