HYPERHIDROSIS TREATMENT

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition that affects up to 365 million people worldwide, of which 27% go undiagnosed. This is because most people do not realise that it is a medical condition that can be managed and treated.

Sweating is a normal and necessary function of the body, but for Hyperhidrosis sufferers, they can produce 4-5 times more sweat than is necessary. This can lead to a huge impact on daily activities, relationships, self-confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Treatment of axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis involves a series of small injections, using tiny needles, just under the dermis (skin) in the area where hair growth is evident. The Allergan Botox blocks the chemical acetylcholine to innervate the sweat glands and this prevents/reduces sweating in the injected area. Reduced underarm sweating is typically noticed within the first 7 days post treatment and results last on average 4-7 months.  Individuals respond differently and there can be no guarantee regarding results. Repeat treatments should not be performed earlier than 4 monthly. This treatment is easily carried out within 15 minutes with minimal downtime.

At Luceo Aesthetics, patient care and safety is our number one priority. We provide all of our patients with a full consultation to discuss your concerns and develop your individual treatment plan. What does the Treatment Involve?

How is Hyperhidrosis Diagnosed?

There are 2 types of Hyperhidrosis - Primary and Secondary.

Primary Hyperhidrosis

Primary Hyperhidrosis is confirmed when the following criteria is met (at least 2):

  • Under 25 years of age at onset of symptoms (the sufferer may not seek help until much later in life)

  • At least one episode of excessive sweating per week

  • Sweating impairs daily activities

  • Sweating is bilateral and relatively symmetrical

  • Positive family history of hyperhidrosis

  • Cessation of excessive focal sweating during sleep

And there is focal, visible excessive sweating of at least 6 months duration that has no other apparent cause.

Primary Hyperhidrosis can be helped by various treatments including special antiperspirants. Topical 20% Aluminium Chloride (Drysol) used nightly causes obstruction of the eccrine glands and destruction of the secretory cells thus reduces sweating. It can cause skin irritation. Many sufferers do not tolerate it or find it gives enough symptom relief.

Secondary Hyperhidrosis

Secondary Hyperhidrosis has various causes and these should be considered and ruled out before treating someone for Primary Hyperhidrosis. These include the  menopause, overactive  thyroid disease, malignancy, tuberculosis and  hyperpituitarism.

Some medicines are associated with causing generalised excess sweating and these include certain classes of  antidepressants, diabetic medications and certain cancer treatments.

At Luceo Aesthetics you will receive a full medical consultation to ensure that any treatment for primary hyperhidrosis is appropriate.
